  • Jhamal Aamon Smith was born March 14, 1975, in Harlem, NY. He was the only child of James ‘Jimmy’ Smith and Jeanne Smith Effinger. His early education was in the public schools of New York, and he graduated from Bayonne High School in Bayonne, NJ. He attended St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, NJ, majoring in Psychology. Jhamal was employed at Local 389 Health Welfare and Pension Fund providing technical support and systems administration from 1999 – 2010 before moving to Atlanta. He was employed at Our Lady of Lourdes from 2013-2023. While attending a family wedding in Cancun, Mexico, Jhamal met his ‘Jersey Girl’ the love of his life, Patrice Barton and they were married August 8, 2009. They have one fur child, Avery Theodore Smith, who brought him much joy. Jhamal was known as the family jokester and for his quick wit. His hobbies included gaming and basketball, cheering on his favorite college team, University of Miami Hurricanes and his Los Angeles Lakers. Being an avid music lover, he had a collection ranging from Garth Brooks to the WuTang Clan.He was preceded in death by his father Jimmy Smith and is survived by his wife of 16 years, Patrice, his fur child Avery; his mother Jeanne Effinger, his sister, Gianna (Derrick) McGregor-Harrison; his mother-in-law, Quita Barton, sisters-in-law Allyson (Marvin) Johnson and Carlene (DeMarre) Joseph and host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
